Clothing and Accessories

Wearing the right clothing is a must for having a comfortable experience while exploring all of the best sites and activities in Big Sur. Hereโ€™s what you should pack in your suitcase:

  • Layers: Of course, if youโ€™re visiting during the cooler seasons, a warm jacket (like North Faceโ€™s Junction Insulated Jacket or Full Zip Fleece Jacket), long-sleeve shirts, and sweaters are all a must. That said, you still need to be prepared to layer in the summer and early fall, as well. Even on a warmer day, it gets rather cool in the early mornings and evenings โ€“ temperatures typically drop down to the low 50s in the summer. Be ready for the changes in temperature throughout the day by bringing along a lightweight jacket (or a vest) and a sweater or two.
  • Rain Jacket: A rain jacket is a must if youโ€™re visiting during the rainy season. Iโ€™ve been loving my Eddie Bauer Cloud Cap Rain Jacket (they have a menโ€™s version, as well). You can bring it if you have space, but I donโ€™t really recommend packing an umbrella โ€“ it can get windy in the area, and it may be more of a nuisance than a help!
  • Athletic Clothing: Youโ€™ll need plenty of comfortable athletic wear for when youโ€™re out hiking and exploring the beauty of Big Sur. My go-to brands that I always wear during outdoor adventures are Vuori and Beyond Yoga. If youโ€™re a leggings person, Iโ€™m a huge fan of the Beyond Yoga High Waisted Midi Leggings (I own four pairs!). Super soft, great quality, and easy to move in!ย
  • Hiking Boots or Supportive Athletic Shoes: If youโ€™re planning on getting plenty of hiking in, I recommend bringing along a pair of hiking boots, along with hiking socks. Even if youโ€™re sticking with easier trails, youโ€™ll be on your feet a lot โ€“ itโ€™s good to have the extra support that hiking boots provide! I brought my trusted Merrell Waterproof Hiking Boots on my most recent Big Sur visit and they were perfect (you can find the menโ€™s version here). If you plan on doing more sightseeing (rather than hiking), I still highly recommend you wear athletic shoes. Youโ€™ll still be walking on dirt and sand as youโ€™re out exploring, so youโ€™ll want something appropriate for the terrain. My On Cloud 5 Sneakers are my go-to for easier trails and sightseeing.
  • Flip Flops: If you plan on heading down to one of the beaches in Big Sur, you may want to pack a pair of flip flops to change into.
  • Baseball or Wide-Brimmed Hat: Bring a hat with you to keep the sun out of your eyes (and off your face) as you hike and spend time by the water.
  • Swimsuit: Big Sur beaches are known for their cold water, strong currents, and rocky coasts โ€“ which means that ocean swimming generally isnโ€™t recommended in the area. That said, if you want to check out a local swimming hole (like the Big Sur River Gorge) or relax in your hotelโ€™s hot tub, be sure to pack a swimsuit.

Skin Protection and Safety Essentials

Youโ€™ll be spending plenty of time during your Big Sur vacation outdoors in the elements, so be sure you have everything you need to keep yourself safe and healthy:

  • Face and Body Sunscreen: Keep your skin protected by bringing along lots of sunscreen (and reapplying throughout the day!). My go-tos for years have been the Supergoop Play SPF 50 and the Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Lotion. Both are water-resistant, so theyโ€™re good to use while youโ€™re hiking and working up a sweat.
  • Scalp Sunscreen: Please donโ€™t end your trip with a scalp burn! The Supergoop Poof Mineral Part Powder has been a lifesaver for me โ€“ it basically feels like a dry shampoo. For those with super short hair, the Sun Bum Sunscreen Scalp Mist is a great option.
  • Polarized Sunglasses: A pair of polarized sunglasses will help minimize glare and eye strain as youโ€™re out in the sun.
  • Water Bottle: Bring along a water bottle (Iโ€™m a big Hydro Flask fan!) to ensure youโ€™re staying optimally hydrated during your excursions in Big Sur.
  • Snacks: There are some places to stop and eat in Big Sur, but itโ€™s generally pretty remote. Pack along some snacks in your day bag as youโ€™re out exploring.
  • Bug Spray: I havenโ€™t faced any major bug problems when visiting Big Sur. That said, you may run into mosquitoes and other insects while youโ€™re exploring the area, so itโ€™s smart to pack along some bug spray (especially if youโ€™re a bug magnet!).
  • First Aid Kit: Donโ€™t forget to bring a small first aid kit to tend to any minor injuries.

Tools and Helpful Technology

Here are a few helpful tools youโ€™ll want to add to your Big Sur packing list:

  • Backpack or Smaller Day Pack: If youโ€™ll be hiking, youโ€™ll want a good backpack to bring along your water bottle, layers, snacks, sunscreen, and other belongings. Ospreyโ€™s Daylite Everyday Backpack is a great option for day hikes. If you prefer something a bit more compact, consider a fanny pack or a shoulder sling bag. These are particularly suitable options if youโ€™re planning on only doing short, easy trails and enjoying the vista from the many viewpoints in Big Sur
  • Portable Charger: You will get very little cell service in Big Sur, but youโ€™ll still want your phone charged to snap photos! Donโ€™t forget to bring along a portable charger
  • Hiking Poles: Hiking poles can be a great tool to bring along if you plan on getting a lot of hiking in (especially if youโ€™re going on trails with lots of elevation gain).
  • Headlamp: If you think thereโ€™s any chance you might be out exploring after dark, consider bringing along a headlamp
  • Portable Misting Fan: For those visiting in the summer or early fall, beat the heat by bringing along a portable misting fan

Miscellaneous Necessities

Finally, here are some additional necessities to bring with you:

  • Lightweight Towel: If you plan on lounging at the beach, bring along a lightweight and quick drying beach towel
  • Google Maps Downloaded on Your Phone: This isnโ€™t a physical thing to pack, but itโ€™s worth mentioning! One of my top Big Sur travel tips is to download Google Maps for offline use on your phone. Thereโ€™s minimal cell service in Big Sur, but with these maps downloaded, youโ€™ll still be able to use navigation.
